Gautama Buddha once asked one of his able disciples,
‘What is stronger than a rock?’
The disciple replied, ‘Iron is stronger than a rock as it can break it into pieces.’
‘And what is stronger than iron?’
‘Fire is stronger than iron as it can melt it,’ came the answer.
‘Is there anything more powerful than fire?’
‘Water , as it can extinguish fire,’ was the reply.
‘What is stronger than water?’ the Buddha asked further.
‘Wind, as it can change the direction of the flow of water.’
‘What is stronger than the wind?’
Now the disciple was caught in a fix. Then the Buddha smiled and said, ‘Stronger than all these things is single minded determination. A person with strong determination can have everything under his control.’
It is said that determination and discipline can be learnt from ants. They are, perhaps, the most determined, hard-working and orderly creatures living on his earth. Man would do well to emulate them.In every human mind is a great slumbering power than can be awakened only by a strong desire and the power the determination.
