A young woman decided to end her life guilt-filled life by committing suicide. Scores of people watched silently as she waded fully dressed into a lake. One person, however, acted. He was an eighteen-year-old cobbler, partly paralyzed by polio. The young man hobbled on his crutch through the water as far as he could. He pleaded with the young woman, who was up to her neck in water.
“I can’t go on living,” she cried. ‘Leave me alone. I want to die.’
‘Look at me,’ the man said quietly. ‘I am a cripple, But I don’t want to kill myself.’
After staring at him for a while, she slowly started moving towards him. Then she accompanied him back to the shore.
No matter what your limitations, you are of special value in God’s eyes. You have an important role to play on the stage of life. Find fulfillment for yourself and remind others that they also count.
