Grooming Properly

A little girl came home one day from school only to discover that her pet duck had drowned. She was shocked and emotionally disturbed because the duck had died in the backyard pond which she had lovingly prepared. Her parents summoned the vet to the scene to see whether it was a homicide or a suicide. The doctor gave a thorough examination and then lifting up the waterlogged body of the bird said, “This duck did not groom herself properly.” He went on explain, “You see, ducks have to coat themselves with a special waterproofing oil that is produced beneath their wings. For some reason, she didn’t, so when she started swimming, the feathers took on water, and she sank like a stone.”

Just as ducks depend upon a unique oil that allow them to be in water without getting wet, human beings too need to cover themselves with a grooming oil in order to be in and not of the world. We need to cover ourselves daily with human and spiritual qualities. We need meditation, prayer and praise. We need to have purity of thought and action.
