British author, best known as the creator of the Harry Potter fantasy series, the idea for which was conceived on a train trip from Manchester to London in 1990. The potter books have won multiple awards and sold more than 400 million copies. She was nearly penniless, severely depressed, divorced, trying to raise a child on her own while attending school and writing a novel. Twelve publishers rejected her book about a boy wizard. In her commencement speech to Harvard in 2008, she eulogized her own valuable failures. ‘Failures taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way’, she said.
